Hughie Jennings was one of those guys you wanted on your team. Fiery, highly competitive, and not afraid to get on base anyway possible – he holds the single-season and career MLB records for being hit by pitches. Jennings’ career began with the old Baltimore Orioles, the same club that featured future Hall of Famers John McGraw, Wilbert Robinson, Dan Brouthers, Wee Willie Keeler, and Joe Kelley. And, like his Orioles teammates, Jennings too would earn himself a plaque in Cooperstown. This majestic Type 1 photograph shows Jennings batting during the 1911 or 1912 season. At this time Jennings was nearing the end of his playing career, but in the prime of his managerial one. It is in this capacity as manager that Jennings has become a baseball folk hero, known for his sideline antics of leaping, gyrating, hooting, and especially hollering his trademark “Ee-Yah!” to cheer his players on. This Type 1 photo shows good tone from age with some edge wear present. The reverse carries Paul Thompson credit stamps and “Jennings - Mgr Detroit” handwritten in pencil. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
