Popular Christy Mathewson from the beautiful 1910 S81 large silk premium tobacco issue packs a load of eye appeal. The S81's were only obtainable by mail in exchange for twenty-five Helmar tobacco coupons per silk. The coupons came one per pack of cigarettes. The S81's were issued at the same time and are closely related to the T3 and L1 Leather premium issues and contain many of the same images. Fantastic full color image of Mathewson is clean and sharp. Small "108" in the upper left corner with "MATHEWSON N.Y. NAT'L" printed below the image. Small stitch marks are visible along all 4 edges. Minor fraying is present at the top edge with more pronounced fraying visible at the bottom. A couple of light stains are present at the top which are more visible on the back. At the darker of the stains the silk has worn some. Very desirable issue.
