Interesting engraved horseshoe fashioned by World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Bob Fitzsimmons and given to a friend John Charles Rogers on a visit to Butte Montana in 1897. On that visit Fitzsimmons made a pair of horseshoes one for the Championship Butte Baseball team and the other for Mr Rogers. Fitzsimmons became a blacksmith early in life and practiced the craft all through his adult days fashioning them for friends and others as mementos. The horseshoe owned by Mr Rogers in this lot was later donated to the Helms Museum by his daughter Mrs. Bess Daniels. The 6" tall horseshoe has been stamped at the top "BOB FITZSIMMONS". To add to this significant piece are a pair of vintage 6" by 8" photos featuring Fitzsimmons at the anvil making this very same horseshoe. The first shows him working at the anvil on the horseshoe while the second has him holding the horseshoe up for the camera. On March 17 1897 Fitzsimmons won the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship by knocking out Jim Corbett in the 14th round of their fight in Carson City Nevada. He held the title for a little over 2 years before losing to James J. Jeffries one of the Greatest Champions in Boxing History. Incredibly rare memento from a turn of the century Heavyweight Champion with actual photographic evidence of the item being produced!Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.
