Exquisite two-part 1st place winner's medal for a 1-mile cycling race in 1892 won by W.S. Cummings. The 1890's are considered the "Golden Age of Cycling" as large organized races became very popular in Europe Japan and the U.S. At one point almost every major city in America had a velodrome for track racing events. It paved the way for the Tour De France which began in 1903 and continues to capture the attention of the sporting world.
The two sections of this delicate and intricately designed gilt silver award medal are connected by two short chain links. The top section is a "W.S. CUMMINGS" inscribed plaque with an openwork scroll design above a set of handlebars and "ONE MILE" - approx 3 x 5cm. "JOHN HARRIOTT - BOSTON" (designer/maker) is stamped on the back. The bottom section is elegantly crafted with a cyclist figure and wreath in gold with "FIRST PRIZE" inscribed above and "1892" below. It has a round shape approx. 5 cm at longest diameter. Altogether the 2-part medal is around 2 x 3.5 inches. Some spotting/rusting is present mostly the top. All chain links are completely intact. It remains in EX condition amazing for being over 120 years old. This is one of the oldest and rarest cycling medals ever found in the hobby.
