Very rare 1879 tintype with very clear photographic image of 12 year major league veteran Hick Carpenter. Carpenter is standing with crossed arms in an undershirt wearing his uniform pants socks and cleats. Studio picture has crossed bats a ball and a catcher's mask neatly laid out in front. At the lower left corner part of his jersey can be seen. Hick Carpenter primarily a 3rd baseman played in the major leagues for 12 seasons - in 1879 with the Syracuse Stars 1880 with the Cincinnati Reds 1881 with the Worcester Ruby Legs all in the National League and from 1882 through 1889 with the Cincinnati Red Stockings of the American Association. He played in one game in 1890 with the National League Louis Browns. Carpenter has 5 cards in the 1887-90 N172 Old Judge tobacco issue. A left handed fielding 3rd baseman Carpenter made 625 errors in 1120 games. Carpenter became one of the first two American players to perform in the Cuban Winter Baseball League in 1879-80. Tintype was purchased by consignor many years ago and at that time it was identified to him as Carpenter. In comparing the photo with available images of Carpenter we believe they appear to match up. Photo is housed in a thermoplastic case. Tintypes like these provide an incredible look into the early beginnings of baseball.
