Five-time All-Star second baseman Steve Sax is best known for his being Rookie of the Year in 1982 and powering the Dodgers to two World Championships. What is lesser known is that Steve Sax is a Civil War and American history buff.

This beautifully framed Robert E. Lee display comes from Sax’s personal collection. The centerpiece is a one-page handwritten letter from Lee to Thomas Williamson regarding his attendance at a church council. Dated 11 May, 1867, the letter is handwritten by Lee in black fountain pen and signed at the bottom, “RE Lee.” The page shows horizontal folds from storage and the ink has faded slightly with age.

The signed letter is flanked by an engraving of General Lee in his Confederate uniform on the left (with facsimile autograph at bottom) and an engraving of Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865 on the right. The letter and engravings have been professionally mounted and framed. An impressive piece of American history from the collection of legendary Dodger Steve Sax. The display comes with an LOA from PSA/DNA and previous auction LOA from JSA. Sax has provided a letter of provenance as well.

A portion of the auction proceeds from all items sold in the Steve Sax Collection will benefit the foundation named for Steve’s son, John, who was one of five U.S. Marines killed in a training flight accident in June 2022 in the California desert. The Capt. John J. Sax Foundation “serves to support those who choose to further their education, exploration and passion for flight."
