This clipped signature was once part of Robert E. Lee personalized linen headquarters stationery. History has shown that Lee rarely used this stationery, and any document on it is very rare. Fortunately, part of the letterhead is still visible on the cut sheet. The importance of Lee signature on the back of this page comes from him signing it as General Commanding, a title he used only after January 23, 1865, when he was promoted to Commander in Chief of all the Confederate Armies. This distinction is very important as to date no other Robert E. Lee signature has surfaced bearing his title as General Commanding. The cut sheet shows toning from age and Lee signature remains crisp. The reverse side showing the letterhead appears to have some adhesive stains. This does not affect General Lee signature on the other side. A very rare variation of the South greatest general, perhaps the only one of its kind in existence.
