This is a truly remarkable historical artifact from the first year of President Lincoln's initial term a July 20 1861 appointment of James Babcock as the Collector of Customs in New Haven Conn. a striking document that features a blazing Lincoln signature and also that of a member of his famed "Team of Rivals" cabinet Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase. The 18-by-14-inch document is in superlative condition betraying the expected folds and just a whisper of staining near the bottom. Both of the dip-pen black signatures are nothing short of sensational a historically important linkage of the great President who guided the nation through the darkest days of the Civil War and the Treasuring Secretary and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who had initially challenged Lincoln for the presidential nomination in 1960.
