Directly from the family estate collection of Barney Stein comes this 7" by 9" original photograph of Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher, Ralph Branca, laying face-first on the steps of the Polo Grounds visiting clubhouse after giving up "The Shot Heard 'Round the World" to Bobby Thomson on October 3, 1951. Dodgers coach Cookie Lavagetto sits alongside in mourning, cigarette in hand, as he ponders what might have been.
Barney Stein titled this emotional shot, "The Agony: The Pitch Heard 'Round the World." A caption taped on the back of the frame states, "Ralph Branca prone and coach, Cookie Lavagetto, sobbing on club house steps at the Polo Grounds, Bronx, New York, after Bobby Thomson nailed the National League pennant for the New York Giants in a playoff game." An emotional capture of player and coach after a historically devastating loss.
This crystal-clear black and white original photo in pristine condition was printed off its original negative from the famous Dodgers photographer's camera many years later. The fiber-based gelatin silver print has been professionally matted and framed. This exact framed photo was on display as part of the Barney Stein Photo Collection in 2001 at the Frick Museum in Pittsburgh, PA. (See uploaded picture of Barney's daughter alongside it.)

This same image is featured on page 8 of Through a Blue Lens, a 2007 book by Bonnie Crosby and Dennis D'Agostino (forewords by Peter O'Malley and Carl Erskine) that chronicled Barney Stein's 1937-1957 Brooklyn Dodgers photography.
